Susan Sontag, in this book, carefully observed fantasy about cancer and tubercullosis in the past. Sontag observation was directed at disease use as an idea or metaphoric in our culture. Though, for him, disease is not a metaphoric, and the most honest way in viewing the ailments of the matter by rejecting such metaphoric thinking.

Fantasy flourishes because cancer and tuberculosis are considered more than deadly diseases: they are identified with death, such as in the receipt of literature of Franz Kafka against tuberculosis she suffers as the "germ of death itself".

Sontag analyzes military tamsils and scientific fiction used to diskuss cancer, and use of disease tamsils in politic rhetorics, by nyl examples from Niccol to Machiavelli, Thomas Hobbes, Edmund Burke, Johns, Friedrich Nietzsche, Philippo Tommaso Marinetti, Adolf Hitler, Antonio Gramsci, and Leon Trotsky.
