Red palm fruit oil is deep red in colour due to the presence of carotenes. Carotenes are plant pigments that give fruits and vegetables their red, yellow, and orange colors. These powerhouse antioxidant nutrients are the same ones that give tomatoes and carrots and other fruits and vegetables their rich red and orange colors. What may shock you is that red palm fruit oil contains more provitamin A (alpha- and beta-carotenes) than tomatoes or carrots. It has 15 times more provitamin A carotenes than carrots and 300 times more than tomatoes. What makes palm oil special, and especially red palm oil, is not so much the fatty acids as it is the nutrient content. Red palm oil contains more phytonutrients than any other dietary oil. Many of these nutrients are powerful antioxidants, which protect the oil from oxidation. In addition to beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, and lycopene, red palm fruit oil also contains vitamin E, vitamin K, CoQ10, squalene, phytosterols, and about 20 other carotenes. Palm oil is one of the richest natural sources of vitamin E. In addition to ordinary vitamin E, red palm fruit oil also contains the highest amount of a super potent form of vitamin E known as tocotrienol. There are four tocotrienols. Palm oil contains all of them. These tocotrienols have up to 60 times the antioxidant activity of ordinary vitamin E. The combination of vitamin E, tocotrienols, carotenes, and other antioxidants makes palm oil a super antioxidant food. Processed palm oil, also known as refined, bleached and deodorized oil (RBD oil) is totally different from the virgin form of palm fruit oil, which is also known as red palm fruit oil. The processed (or RBD) palm oil does not contain cholesterol. It is widely use in the food manufacturing industry. It behaves like hydrogenated fats (the dangerous trans-fatty acids) in packaged foods since it has “thickness” at room temperature. This makes it ideal for many food manufacturers to use in place of hydrogenated oils in their snack products. Processed foods can then be advertised as being “trans fat free” and “cholesterol free”. However, when red palm oil is refined and processed, its red color disappears. Its nutritional and healing benefits are destroyed when it is refined. Once it becomes part of a processed snack food, it no longer features the health benefits and powerful antioxidants found only in the raw palm fruit oil.
